Regarding Sherlock Jr....yes the renewal is proper, but I checked the copy of the movie I have, (from IA I believe) and found no notice in it. Perhaps Bill could check his copy. Unless I'm missing something, shouldn't this be PD?

I didn't download the films and check for copyright notices, but based on its DVD releases, the film doesn't look remotely PD. Compare it with the plethora of releases (including one by well-known PD distributor Alpha Video) for The General, another well-known Buster Keaton feature.
The lack of copyright notice puts the film into the public domain only if the print you look at is an exact copy of the prints distributed to movie theaters when the film was first published. It could be that the print wasn't preserved and all or part of the title scene was lost. Or it could indeed be that it was first published without a notice, but in such a case I think PD distributors would be all over it since it is a popular film (8.3 rating on IMDB with over 10000 votes).
